How can we prevent ourselves from Mesothelioma?

Nov 29, 2009

The largest percentage of mesothelioma patients have developed it as a result of being exposed asbestos over a long period of time. I.e. during their employment, or someone who has had to wash their spouses clothing over many years, unwittingly not realizing that the clothing is contaminated with asbestos fibers.

The majority of people that will be diagnosed with mesothelioma within the next 20 year period, are those who have been heavily exposed to asbestos – 20-40 years previously, prior to when asbestos was banned. Therefore after 2020, there will be fewer people diagnosed with the disease.

People who are still at risk from developing mesothelioma are those who are unwittingly are doing a job where asbestos still remains. I.e. In old buildings. For instance – the plumber may constantly work on asbestos covered pipes etc, and may cut into the asbestos or tear off the asbestos, releasing the deadly fibers into the air and inhaling them.

Asbestos is only dangerous when it is friable (crumbly) or when it is disturbed. I.e. cut, sawn, drilled or sanded, etc.
